Ekin latest Basque group to call time on activities
EuroNews – 01/10/2011
A banned Basque separatist organisation, Ekin, has announced it is to disband. The news was reported in Basque newspaper Gara on Saturday. Ekin allegedly was a political organisation arm of ETA, the armed terrorist group. Created in 1999, it is said to have coordinated street protests and recruited, and spread propaganda.
Two months ahead of a general election, it is a boost for the struggling Socialist government.
“We are in the final stage of a gang that has begun an unstoppable process of dissolution and is realising that it can never return to its barbarous acts to influence the life of this country,” said Spanish Interior Minister Antonio Camacho.
Although ETA declared what it called a “permanent ceasefire” in January of its half-century of armed struggle which has cost over 850 lives, arrests have continued of its militants and sympathisers. Madrid insists it will maintain the pressure on ETA and its associated groups until there is total disarmament.
